Competitions for the semester

We have a few different tournaments coming up for the club, the first one is limited to the regular members of the club & senior members as we take a trip to MA to compete in the 2012 Indoor Archer's Cup. (http://www.acearchers.com/indacup.html) This event shall test everyone's abilities to the max due to the number of high profiled archers attending.
The next two competitions for this semester we have an outdoor tournament planned for one of the weekends (date to be determined) and the Stony Brook Invitational which this club hosts at our off-campus indoor practice site. Anyone who has shot with us before may compete or shoot for fun at the outdoor tournament but you must have come shot with us off-campus a few times in order to qualify in attending the Stony Brook Invitational held for the 21st of April.

This year we have invited many archery clubs from various New York City colleges to attend. We have invited the archery clubs at FIT, Columbia University, Queens College, and of course our good friends at Baruch College to join us in this historical meetup in the battle of the colleges.
Our good friends at Baruch College and Columbia University have already accepted the invitation and we are currently waiting for FIT and Queens College to reply.

This semester is going to be big :)

As soon as we get the clearance to shoot outdoors, we will send an e-mail out informing everyone on our mailing list. If you haven't signed up to our mailing list already, use the form at the front page of this website or send an email to sbucofa@gmail.com with the title "ADD."

Campus Rec has moved all of the sports clubs to the Three Village Fields by South P last semester but they are having difficulties obtaining storage space and lights for the fields at the moment, so starting on the 20th of Febuary, we are expected to be able to use our old shooting space at the softball fields right across from the train station. (map can be found on this website.)

Good luck on your midterms :)

-Brian

Exciting spring semester.

Ladies and gentlemen. I would like to give you people a sneak peak of what's in stored for the stony brook archery club during the spring semester.

Last fall, USG has passed their largest assest grant to date. That honour has been given to us, the Stony Brook Company of Archers. With this new funding available to us, we are planning on replacing all of our old equipment and buying a surplus of it so that more people can experience the sport of archery.
There were times in the past where many people show up to outdoor practices onto to wait 10-20 minutes to even try to fire off an arrow. Those times are in the past now as we introduce our new lineup of equipment debuting this semester as soon as fields are open! You get to try them even sooner if you've been signing up for thursdays :D

As part of a Campus Recreation mandate for all sports clubs, we are also revising our constitution to reflect on current times and adding new passages as required by Campus Recreation.

We're not stopping there either. This year for the Stony Brook Invitational, we are inviting 4 colleges to compete with us for the ultimate prize of bragging rights and for a trophy of an unimaginable size. Our trophies are currently floating around the Sports Complex and the SAC Dining hall where you may have seen it. To keep our position as best in New York and to expand our college further into the national collegiate level, we're going to take the first step this semester by taking over the north east.

That's right!

So come join us and be apart of a revolution. :D

Stony Brook vs Baruch @ Baruch Gymnasium - Oct. 29th, 2011

First of all i'd like to thank our good friends at Baruch for hosting this event and allowing us to shoot with them once again. Our two schools have always had good relations with each other and this is one of the main ways we keep in contact :)

Going into this fun shoot with Baruch, I not only wanted to see the growth of our two clubs, but the main point was to focus on our members who have been through a new training regiment that was developed. This regiment involved more mental training and strength training but the total shooting time with a bow and arrow was kept the same. Competition is not about winning because once you have that mindset while on the shooting line in an important competition, you have already lost. Half the competition is about keeping your calm and doing what you learned and half of the competition is keeping your strength so that you shoot at the optimum level every single shot.

With these two things in mind, we trained our shooters in a way that was never done before and the results can be seen as a reflection on our scores.

Not only can we now label our experiment as a success, I am very proud of the shooters that we have been able to train just this semester alone.
A team competition does not focus on the individual but the overall team. If one person messes up, you have the person next to you to say "I got your back." Always know that your team is standing behind you cheering you on. Don't lose focus just because you shot a bad arrow.

Our strength in the club comes from the unity of our members.

There are more competitions to come, including many individual events, so hang in there and train hard. The road is far from over.

-Brian
Welcome back to Stony Brook for another great year!
As the administration changes, there will be more things to look forward to this year.

This year we have a new budgeting system and we are allowed to go to more events and buy more equipment without using our "main budget." we don't know how it works 100% yet but it sounds promising. Thank you USG and thank everyone for supporting the Stony Brook Company of Archers!

Pasted below is an e-mail sent out by our secretary, Mo, and it gives general information about the club -
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to e-mail us :)
-Brian/President

1) Info -- old member can skip this

1.1) Our email, website, Facebook group:

Our email is sbucofa@gmail.com . Please do not email any of the e-board about club stuff unless it is something very personal.

Our website is http://stonybrookarchery.yolasite.com/ . I am trying to keep it as updated as possible but the way you get the most update is from our email.

Our facebook group is https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/2201637233/ .

1.2) No Fee, equipment, experience needed

We provide basic equipment and training. All you need to pay is for extra stuff like hoodies because USG does not fund that. If you have your own equipment, that is even better.

1.3) Meeting and Practice time + location:

Our meeting time is every Tuesday 7pm - 8:30pm. We tends to end early. It happens at Union 236 unless announced otherwise. You do not need to but is recommend to come to our meeting before going to practice.

We have off-campus practice every Thursday 7pm-10pm. Sign-up is required and it normally happens during the Tuesday meeting on a first come first serve bases with privilege for senior members and drivers It happens at Smith point Archery Range and we normally meet up at SAC lobby at 6:50pm. We have limited membership and cars.

We have on-campus practice every Tuesday and Thursday 10am - 1pm on the campus recreation softball field. There is a map of that on our website. It is extremely weather dependent so you need to check your email for information about them.

In order to participate in any of our practice, you are required to read our safety guideline and sign a liability form. I have many copies with me most of the time. If you are under 18 and do not want your parent to sign the form, talk to us personally.

2) This week

Let's get to the meat of this email:

2.1) On Campus practice

It seems like the weather does not allow use to have a practice this week. Weather.com says that it will rain both Tuesday and Thursday. I will send out another email tomorrow with a more accurate weather and maybe message from Campus Rec on Tuesday.

2.2) Off Campus practice

Regular members can sign up via email. Note, only for our regular members, but can you please come to Tuesday's meeting if you're undergrad because there is some paperwork from the Campus Recreation. (If you are a regular, I should at least remember your name/nick name.) Other people must come on Tuesday to sign up during the meeting.

2.3) General Body Meeting

Regular members please come to sign the membership roster for Campus Recreation. That is only for undergrad since we are a USG funded club.

Otherwise, our president Brian Tien, will have an information session for about 15 minutes at the beginning of the meeting and give his so-called "Lecture" (it is just some basic form teaching), then the new members will be broken down into groups and the e-board, field marshals and senior members will teach all newbies the basics.

I have bought some oreo. I have no idea how many is in each box but I think I have about 100 oreos. It is a treat from me. The other e-board member may get things for you too.

BTW, our email list expanded to almost 3 times its original size. We may not have enough space in our room. Let's hope that we do.

Sorry for another long email, at least it is slightly shorter.

If you have any question, email us at sbucofa@gmail.com .

... I just found out that I can send this email to at most 500 people. Something new.--

Wrap up of *correction* 2nd Annual */correction* Stony Brook Invitational

First of all i'd like to thank Smith Point Archery for helping us out so much with the shoot when our own student government bailed on us. It means a lot to actually have a range that we can call our home when even the university doesn't pay a lot of attention to us.
Also, a big shout-out to the Baruch Archery Club for making their way half way into Long Island to attend this shoot :D

As i pointed out before, competition is not neccesarily a place to win, but a place where you get to see the fruits of your training and to test your real limits in archery. During the first half of the competiton, Baruch was keeping up with his neck and neck, both team exhibited forms with little flaw and battled it out honorably in the name of their respective schools. The atmosphere was deadly and nerve wracking. It wasn't until half way where Stony Brook had a clear and steady lead over their opponents.
It wasn't until after the competition when i had some time to examine the invitational as a whole where i finally figured out why it was like that.

The reason was being that Baruch shooters were quickly growing tired whereas we train our shooters not only in form but in endurance under competition conditions where their endurance is always being pushed to the max. There's not a day after our practices where half of our members don't complain of being tired of shooting. But it is also because of this training regiment that we have succeeded.

But despite the results of the competition, archery has been played and fun was had.
This wraps up our indoor season as this is the last shoot that we can have before our finals in two weeks.

I would like to thank the 2010-2011 E-Board and field marshals for making this year one of the best years in the club yet and i would like to thank all of our members for participating in competitions, showing up to tuesday meetings, thursday shoots, and to the people who would of liked to shoot outdoors more but couldn't because of the crazy weather that only liked to rain on mondays and wednesdays.
Best of luck to our shooters during the outdoor season over the summer and best of luck to all of the graduating members of the stony brook archery club.

Special shout-out to our 2010-2011 E-Board turning Emeritus:
Kieth Fiore - President
Amanda Lai - Treasurer

and shout-out to our newly elected 2011-2012 E-Board
Brian Tien - President
Stephen Jiang - Vice President
Mo Lam - Secretary
Anthony Tom - Treasurer

Thank you all for your support, effort, and time towards the Stony Brook Company of Archers!
See you all next semester! (This blog will be kept updated throughout the summer time by the newly elected e-board! :D )

-Brian

1st Annual Stony Brook Invitational

31 Hours until the 1st Annual Stony Brook Invitational. Although many schools that we have invited to shoot with us could not make it to the competition, we will make the best out of it with the people that are able to show up. Hopefully this tradition of the Stony Brook Invitational will carry on throughout the years that this club is alive because competition is a great way where individuals will advance.
Most people don't know that there's a difference when you shoot in practice and when you shoot in a competition. The love, anger, hate, training, and your knowledge of the sport all come out when you're competing and when something is on the line.
When there is something to lose, something to prove, and something to win; the best of you comes out.
In practice where you're just training and having fun, you don't really care.

Win or lose, the time we spend together is worth more than anything during these competition days.

The point of this invitational is not only to try and win a big trophy, but to realize where you stand as an individual in the sport of archery and what you can do to improve yourself.

Shout out to the Stony Brook Company of Archers. Without you guys, this invitational could not of happened. Each and everyone of you should show your best faces saturday and bring the big one back to home grounds.

SEE YOU ALL THERE!

-Brian
Before, the black background version, I wanted the push a website out fast so the quality of it was not top notch and many things were left un-done.

Now that I actually have time, and one of my friends on an eboard of another club directly attacking my abilities - i have decided to push out Stony Brook Archery Website v1.2

New GFX, new pages, new outline - and most importantly, NEW GFX (i'm aware i said new graphics twice)

So look forward to a cleaner/better site in the upcoming weeks!

-Brian
To Ti-Yogi!

As we are about to head out to ti-yogi for our first official team competition this year - there are many things that an archer must prepare for to get yourself ready for competition.
1) First and THE MOST important - A good nights sleep
    - Last night at 4:30am i fell victim to a real fire alarm in my building where we were outside for about 20 minutes while fire marshals/police/and RHDs find the ass hat who decided to light a few buds up in his room. A disturbed sleeping schedule for an archer... no... for any athlete is a offense punishable by death in my eyes. An athlete MUST be about to get a good nights rest or else everything will fall apart as soon as you begin. I cannot stress this enough.
2) A good breakfast - Think back to your elementary school days where they stressed that breakfast is your most important meal of the day. Back then, i thought they were trolling us, but as i grew older, i found out that it was indeed THE MOST important meal of the day. Breakfast jump starts your metabolism for the day. If it were not for breakfast, you would be slumping around the whole day. Very bad on competition day.

Can't think of any more right now because i'm short on time and need to be at the Student Activities Center in about half an hour to meet up with my fellow archers.
But one last note before i go:

Stay calm. You cannot be too excited in archery. Focus each shot.

BE BACK TONIGHT!

-Brian
Secretary

Thoughts on first official scoring

When people score without being forced to do so, they generally do a lot better. Lets take, for example, a random thursday night where we ask members to score for themselves. They generally do a lot better.

Why is this?

It's because you're not under the pressure of competition.
A lot of our members this year just started archery, but that's okay. They will slowly get into the groove with proper practice. Being under the pressure of competition and shooting next to people who are better than you will improve your game more than any training would ever do (assuming you have already reached a certain level of training).

The reason we (the e-board) pushes for this type of training is to put all if you under pressure.
Shoot three arrows in 2 and a half minutes
Score
Come back and do it again.

This will put your training to the test and test how well you can keep your form.

One of the mistakes that everyone makes is that they do not use time to their advantage. Today, i witnessed 10 out of the 12 people finish shooting their arrows within a minute. The point is not to shoot fast, the point is to concentrate so that you make every shot count. It's easy to fling arrows down the range but it's hard to concentrate on every shot so that you're always precise with it.

The best advice that i would give after witnessing tonight is to pace yourself. You have 2 and a half minutes to shoot three arrows. Don't pull them off in under a minute. Take a shot, breathe, stare at the target, focus, and shoot again.
When you are too focused on pulling off arrow after arrow, you lose sight of why you're scoring in the first place.
When you score, it's not for practice, we're not training endurance now and we're not working on form. When you score, you test yourself to see what those weeks of practices are worth. Do not treat scoring as practice. That is what everyone needs to work on.

And maybe next time i'll lock the door so Dave doesn't come in to sell everyone chocolate... T_T"

Also, do not doubt yourself. When you doubt yourself, you start shooting badly. Tell yourself that you can do it and know that you can do it. Archery is a mind game that you're playing with yourself. It's good to have fun at practices, but when we score, please take it seriously.

-Brian
Secretary
